ANC 5C02 Commissioner

ABOUT KARLA

After reading about plans to restore vibrancy on Rhode Island Ave and actively working with community members to promote redevelopment on the corridor, Karla was elected to the Board of Directors for the Friends of Rhode Island Ave, an organization started by Woodridge residents to promote revitalization on the Avenue. Karla has volunteered with community cleanups and will continue efforts to revive Route 1 to the main street residents remember.

Karla was born in Chicago, IL, and after her parents moved away from the city, she was raised and attended school in Michigan.  The smaller, community-focused environment shaped her passion for working with others to give back.  After graduating from high school, Karla moved to the Washington, DC area to attend college at Howard University where she completed her studies in sociology.

Karla works as analyst for a not-for-profit government consulting company in McLean, VA, supporting the Department of Defense. Previously, Karla has worked within the Department of the Air Force and the National Guard Bureau, Air National Guard.  During her time with the Department, she joined the organization, Toastermasters International, and served as the Vice President of Education.  Karla has held various roles in leadership and has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award for exceptional service to the Department.  The same dedication Karla illustrates while working with our Service (Military) men and women day-to-day will be shown as she serves her community.

Karla is also a pet parent to a beautiful black lab, Bryce, and they both love walking the community and meeting new neighbors.

Karla Butler is a proud Ward 5 resident and homeowner in the Woodridge (Langdon) community.   Karla is seeking to diligently serve her community as the new ANC Commissioner for 5C02.

Since purchasing her home in 2011, Karla has been extremely active in the community.  She believes everyone, new and old residents, carries the same vision for living in a vibrant area.       Not only has Karla attended meetings to voice concerns regarding issues in the Langdon community, she created a community newsletter, Hello! Neighbor, to inform residents on emerging and current events throughout Ward 5.  Karla’s goal for creating the newsletter was to promote more dialogue among residents in her immediate Langdon community.  Since Karla did not want to leave behind any resident from obtaining news, she tirelessly walked door to door to ensure each home received an issue.  As Commissioner, Karla will continue to stay visible and engaged within the community—5C02.

Karla’s platform, “Here to Serve You (5C02)” started from the devotion she has for her community and the District.  Karla has worked with the Office of the Mayor, the Ward 5 Councilmember, 5th District Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Department of Public (DPW), and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to make her community a safer and cleaner environment for all residents.  Karla is a member of the 5th District Citizen’s Advisory Council (CAC) and regularly attends Woodridge Civic Association meetings.  Recently, Karla has volunteered at the Langdon Elementary School clean up event because of the passion she has for assisting youth in the community.
